You might have already tried sanding the edge, adding a shim, or even replacing the latch, only to have the problem return a few weeks later. Start With the Right Diagnosis
Before reaching for a plane or a saw, figure out why the door is sticking. A door that binds only in summer usually swells from moisture. A door that drags along the bottom often means the hinges have pulled loose or the frame has shifted. A door that rubs on the latch side may have bowed from uneven pressure or poor bracing. Take a step back and look at the whole opening: the door slab, the hinges, the latch, and the surrounding frame. If the shed itself is racked or the concrete slab has heaved, no amount of trimming will make the door close smoothly.
Check the Hinges First
Hinges are the most common culprit. If the screws are stripped or the hinge leaves are bent, the door will sag and rub. Remove the hinge screws and inspect the holes. If they are enlarged, insert wooden toothpicks or matchsticks coated with wood glue into the holes, let them dry, then reinstall the screws. This is a basic repair that often solves a sagging door. If the hinge itself is bent or cracked, replace it with a similar hinge sized for the door weight and thickness.
Inspect the Frame and Threshold
Look at the gap between the door and the frame on the hinge side and the latch side. The gap should be fairly even. If the hinge side is tight at the top and wide at the bottom, the frame may be out of plumb. Use a level to check the jamb. If the shed has settled, you may need to adjust the hinges or plane the door edge, but if the frame itself is twisted or the shed structure is racked, you may need to brace the shed or realign the frame.
Address Moisture Swelling
Outdoor shed doors are exposed to rain, dew, and humidity. Even if the door is painted, moisture can enter through cracks, end grain, or poorly sealed edges. When wood absorbs water, it expands, and the door binds against the frame. The permanent solution is not just trimming the edge repeatedly; it is controlling moisture and allowing for movement.
Seal All Six Faces
If the door is bare wood or the paint is failing, sand the surface lightly to remove loose finish, then apply a primer and a high-quality exterior paint or stain. Pay special attention to the top and bottom edges, which are often left unfinished. Sealing these edges slows moisture absorption considerably. If the door is already painted but sticking, check for gaps in the paint or caulk around the frame.
Allow for Swelling
Trim the door edge just enough to create a consistent expansion gap of about one-eighth inch on the latch side and top. Use a block plane or a belt sander with coarse grit, and work slowly. After trimming, seal the freshly cut edge immediately. Do not leave bare wood exposed. If the door swells again, investigate the source of moisture rather than trimming more.
Consider a Door Sweep
If the bottom of the door is dragging due to a high threshold or uneven concrete, a door sweep can bridge the gap without trimming the door itself. A sweep also helps block insects and drafts. Just make sure it does not interfere with the threshold or trap water against the door.
Fix Hinge and Latch Issues Properly
Stripped screw holes are common in shed doors because the screws are short or the jamb material is soft. Replacing a hinge without reinforcing the screw holes rarely lasts. Use longer screws that reach into the framing beyond the jamb, if possible. For the latch side, a strike plate with elongated holes can give you some adjustment range.
Reinforce Stripped Screw Holes
If the jamb is soft or damaged, remove the hinge or strike plate, fill the old holes with wood filler, let it dry completely, and then reinstall the plate with fresh screws. This is more reliable than toothpicks for larger holes. For a more permanent repair, drill out the holes and glue in wooden dowels, then trim them flush and reinstall the screws.
Check the Latch Alignment
A door that is hard to latch may have drifted sideways. Loosen the strike plate screws, move the plate slightly, and tighten. If the latch bolt is too short for the strike opening, you may need to deepen the hole in the jamb. Never force the latch; you can damage the mechanism.
Deal With a Sagging or Warped Door
If the door itself has warped so badly that planing the edges does not help, you may need to brace it. A diagonal brace on the inside of the door can help hold it flat. Attach the brace from the bottom hinge corner to the top latch corner, which is the classic compression brace. If the door is hollow or the core is rotting, a brace may not be enough; consider replacing the door slab.
Plane the Edge Correctly
When you do need to remove material, use a plane or sander with even pressure. Mark the area that rubs with chalk, then remove a small amount at a time. Rehang the door and check the fit frequently. Remove material from the bottom of the door for a threshold clearance, but keep the edge square so the door still seals properly.
Choose the Right Hardware and Tools
Having the correct tools makes this repair straightforward. A magnetic screwdriver set helps you work with the long screws used in hinges without dropping them. A household tool kit includes basic wrenches, a hammer, and a level, which are handy for adjusting hinges and strike plates. If you need to remove old screws that are stripped, a screw extractor is useful, but often you can simply use a slightly larger screw.
Use a Power Drill for Long Screws
Driving long hinge screws by hand is tiring. A cordless drill kit makes the job easier and gives you more control. Set the clutch to a low torque to avoid stripping the screw head or breaking the screw. Many kits come with drill bits and driver bits, so you have what you need for pilot holes and for driving the screws.
Measure Before You Cut
Before you plane or saw anything, measure the door and the frame carefully. Use a laser measuring tool to get quick and accurate dimensions of the opening. This is especially helpful if the frame is not square. Write down the measurements and compare them to the door dimensions. The gap you need depends on the material and the climate, but about one-eighth inch is a good starting point.
Watch Out for Structural Problems
If the shed door sticks because the whole shed is leaning or the floor is heaving, fixing the door alone will not work. Look at the foundation. If the shed is on concrete blocks that have settled unevenly, you may be able to shim the blocks. If the skids are rotting, the shed may need to be lifted or rebuilt. Do Not Ignore Cracks and Rot

Maintain the Finish
An exterior door that is exposed to the elements needs regular maintenance. Check the paint or stain every spring and fall. Touch up any bare spots before they become larger problems. If the finish is peeling, strip it off and refinish, rather than painting over the damage. Sealing the end grain is especially important for the bottom edge of the door.

Also, if you discover rot, extensive insect damage, or a structural problem, do not attempt to cut or support the shed yourself. A sagging roof or an unstable wall is not a DIY fix.
