Why a Faucet Drip Keeps Returning
If you have already replaced a washer or O-ring and the drip returned, the obvious culprit is that the new part failed quickly. But the more accurate explanation is usually that the replacement part was not the correct one for the fixture, or that the surface it seals against is damaged. Faucet washers and O-rings are not universal. They come in different sizes, shapes, and materials, and they must match the specific cartridge, stem, or compression mechanism inside your faucet. When you install a washer that is slightly too large, too small, or made of a material that is incompatible with your water chemistry, it distorts, swells, or deteriorates quickly. Even a correctly sized washer will not seal if the brass seat it presses against is rough, pitted, or scored. That roughness acts like sandpaper on a new washer, and the drip returns within weeks.
Another common cause is overtightening. When a repair is done in a hurry, it is tempting to crank down on the packing nut or retaining ring to stop the leak. That crushing force deforms the washer or O-ring immediately and can crack the stem or damage the threaded parts. Ball faucets, cartridge faucets, and ceramic-disc faucets each have their own failure modes. A compression faucet that drips from the spout usually needs a new washer and often a new seat. A cartridge faucet that drips or has poor temperature control usually needs a new cartridge. Ceramic-disc faucets rarely drip, so when they do, the problem is often the seat or the cartridge assembly itself. If you are unsure which type you have, take the handle apart and look at the internal mechanism. Address the Real Source of the Drip
Once you have confirmed the correct part and the condition of the seat, it is time to address the actual cause. If the washer is the right size but the drip continues, look for a worn stem, a loose retaining screw, or a damaged cartridge body. Worn threads can allow the washer to shift sideways so it cannot align with the seat. A loose screw that holds the washer in place will let it wobble and fail. In compression faucets, the stem packing may also need a few wraps of plumber's tape before reassembly. This tape is not the same as thread sealant for pipe joints, but it helps the threaded parts make a watertight fit without overtightening.
Clear Mineral Deposits Before Reassembly
Hard water leaves a crusty deposit on the stem, seat, and inside the valve body. Even a tiny grain of mineral can keep the washer from seating fully. Before you install new parts, soak the metal components in white vinegar or a descaler for a few minutes, then wipe them clean. Do not scrape the seat with a steel tool unless it is specifically designed for that task. The goal is to remove the deposit without creating new scratches. This cleaning step is easy to skip, but it is often the difference between a repair that lasts a month and one that lasts years.
When the Problem Is Not the Washer at All
If the faucet is still dripping after a careful rebuild, stop and look at the whole fixture. A drip that appears at the base of the spout or around the handle may be coming from the O-rings on the pivot or the body of the faucet, not from the valve seat. These O-rings are located around the spout or the handle sleeve, and they wear independently.
