Water, Water Everywhere: The Drainage Problem

The most common complaint with raised beds is poor drainage. Plants sit in soggy soil, roots rot, and the whole bed smells sour. Many people assume that because the bed is raised, water will just drain out the bottom. That is only true if the soil below and at the base of the bed allows it. If your bed sits on compacted clay, a patio, or a solid liner, water has nowhere to go. It fills the bottom of the bed like a bathtub, saturating the deepest roots.

Check the Base First

Start by inspecting how the bed was constructed. If you used a weed barrier fabric at the bottom, that is often the culprit. Signs You Need Professional Help

Most raised bed issues are things you can fix yourself. However, if the structure is severely rotted, leaning dangerously, or has collapsed, that is a different matter. If you built the bed against a house or structure, water damage to the siding or foundation could be a serious issue. If water is pooling against your foundation because of the bed's placement, you need to address drainage at the house level, which may require professional grading or a French drain. Also, if the soil in the bed is contaminated, for instance by lead or other toxins, you should seek professional guidance on how to dispose of it safely and avoid growing food in that area.

Prevention: Build It Right the Next Time

If your bed is beyond repair, or you are starting fresh, think about these principles when you rebuild:

  • Choose a site with at least six hours of direct sun for most vegetables.
  • Level the ground before placing the bed to prevent erosion and water pooling.
  • Use rot-resistant lumber or a metal kit designed for ground contact.
  • Line the bottom with hardware cloth to keep out burrowing pests, then a layer of landscape fabric on top of that, but only if it drains well.

Knowing When a Quick Fix Is Not Enough

Some problems are not solved by a patch. If you have persistent drainage that rots your plants every year, the bed may simply be in the wrong place. If the native soil below is extremely heavy clay and you do not have the ability to improve it, you might be better off with a different gardening method, such as building a deeper raised bed with a bottom that you can fully control, or using container gardening.

Similarly, if your frame is falling apart because of hidden rot or insect damage, continuing to screw new boards into weakened wood will never hold. Demolish the old bed and build a new one. Salvage the soil if it is healthy and use it for your new bed.

Repairing a Minor Split in Wood

Over time, you may notice a crack or split in a board. This is often cosmetic but can let water in and accelerate rot. You can fill small cracks with a weatherproof wood filler. Often, a minor repair like adjusting the water flow or adding compost can save the bed. Other times, it is better to start over. There is no shame in rebuilding better than before.
