The Only 3 Things Beginners Need to Know

  1. Black probe always goes in COM. Red probe goes in VΩmA. This never changes.

  4. Insert the red probe into the smaller slot (hot).
  5. Read the display — should show approximately 110–125V if the outlet is working.
  6. Remove probes. Done!

Beginner Task 2: Test a Battery

  1. Turn the dial to VDC and select 20V (for a 9V or 12V battery).
  2. Touch the black probe to the battery's negative (−) terminal.
  3. Touch the red probe to the positive (+) terminal.
  4. Read the display:
  • AA battery: Good = 1.5V+, Replace = below 1.2V
  • 9V battery: Good = 9V+, Replace = below 7V
  • 12V car battery: Good = 12.6V+, Needs charging = below 12.2V

Beginner Task 3: Test a Fuse

  1. Remove the fuse from the circuit first.
  2. Turn the dial to the continuity symbol (beep/sound wave icon).
  3. Touch one probe to each end of the fuse.
  4. Beeps: Fuse is good.
  5. No beep: Fuse is blown — replace it.

Reading the Display: What the Numbers Mean

  • OL or 1: Overload — switch to a higher range on the dial
  • Negative number: Probes are reversed — swap red and black
  • 0.00: Switch to a lower range

  • Never touch the metal tips of the probes while measuring live voltage
