The Only 3 Things Beginners Need to Know
- Black probe always goes in COM. Red probe goes in VΩmA. This never changes.
- Select the right mode on the dial before touching anything.

Understanding the Dial Symbols (Simplified)
- VAC or V~: AC Voltage — for household outlets (120V in the US)

Beginner Task 1: Test a Household Outlet
- Insert black probe into COM, red probe into VΩmA.
- Turn the dial to VAC and select 200V (or the next range above 120V).
- Insert the black probe into the larger outlet slot (neutral).
- Insert the red probe into the smaller slot (hot).
- Read the display — should show approximately 110–125V if the outlet is working.
- Remove probes. Done!
Beginner Task 2: Test a Battery
- Turn the dial to VDC and select 20V (for a 9V or 12V battery).
- Touch the black probe to the battery's negative (−) terminal.
- Touch the red probe to the positive (+) terminal.
- Read the display:
- AA battery: Good = 1.5V+, Replace = below 1.2V
- 9V battery: Good = 9V+, Replace = below 7V
- 12V car battery: Good = 12.6V+, Needs charging = below 12.2V
Beginner Task 3: Test a Fuse
- Remove the fuse from the circuit first.
- Turn the dial to the continuity symbol (beep/sound wave icon).
- Touch one probe to each end of the fuse.
- Beeps: Fuse is good.
- No beep: Fuse is blown — replace it.
Reading the Display: What the Numbers Mean
- OL or 1: Overload — switch to a higher range on the dial
- Negative number: Probes are reversed — swap red and black
- 0.00: Switch to a lower range
Beginner Safety Rules
- Never touch the metal tips of the probes while measuring live voltage
- Always select the correct mode before touching the circuit
- Turn the dial to OFF when finished
- Never measure resistance or continuity on a live circuit — always turn off power first
