Yet every summer the musty smell returns, and you worry about what is slowly rotting underneath your feet.
The root of the problem is not that your crawl space gets wet; it is that moisture arrives faster than it leaves. Rainwater soaks the soil, humid outside air seeps in, and the ground below the vapor barrier stays damp. If you only treat the symptom with a quick patch or an occasional appliance, the moisture cycle resumes. A lasting fix depends on understanding the three sources of crawl space moisture: surface water, ground dampness, and humid air. Then you can build a system that prevents all three from entering.
Start With Drainage Before You Seal Anything
Many crawl space repairs fail because people begin by wrapping, insulating, or covering the space before they stop the water from getting in. That is a mistake. If you trap moisture behind a vapor barrier or insulation, you create a perfect environment for mold and rot. The first priority is always diversion.
Walk the perimeter of your house on a rainy day and watch where water travels. Gutters should empty at least several feet away from the foundation, and downspout extensions should carry water beyond the cropline. The soil around the foundation should slope away from the house so it drains rather than feeding water under the rim. Do not assume the grade is fine just because you do not see standing water right next to the wall; even a slight downward slope toward the foundation can keep the soil wet for weeks.
Fix downspouts that pour water against the wall, and extend them so the outlet is clear of the footing. A poly vapor barrier placed on the ground is the classic solution, but installation details determine whether it actually works.

Overlap seams by at least twelve inches, and tape them with a tape meant for vapor barriers, not duct tape. If you can already see damp soil, standing water, or puddles after rain, a vapor barrier alone will not stop the problem. You may need an interior perimeter drain and a sump pump system. Control Humid Air With Intake and Exhaust Vents
Even with a dry floor and a sealed ground, humid outside air can condense on cool surfaces inside the crawl space. In many climates, venting a crawl space during summer does more harm than good because it pulls in hot, humid air. Building codes vary a lot on how crawl spaces are ventilated. Some require permanent vents if the space is not conditioned; others allow a sealed crawl space with a dehumidifier as part of an engineered assembly.
If you have foundation vents, do not assume that leaving them open all summer is the answer.
