How to Nail Hardwood Floor
Share
Two Nailing Methods for Hardwood Floors
- Blind nailing - nails driven through the tongue of each board at a 45-degree angle, hidden by the groove of the next board. Used for all rows except the first and last.
- Face nailing - nails driven straight down through the face of the board, visible on the surface. Used only for the first and last rows where the nailer can't reach, and covered by baseboard.
The Right Tool: Pneumatic Flooring Nailer
The 3PLUS 4-in-1 Pneumatic Flooring Stapler/Nailer is the standard tool for blind nailing hardwood floors. It drives cleats or staples through the tongue at the correct 45-degree angle automatically - you position it on the board and strike the plunger with a mallet. This is far faster and more consistent than hand nailing.
Connect to an air compressor set to 70-100 PSI (check the nailer's specifications). Test on a scrap piece first to confirm the fastener is fully seated without splitting the tongue.
Nail Spacing Guidelines
- Nail every 6-8 inches along the length of each board
- Nail within 2 inches of each board end to prevent end lifting
- For boards shorter than 12 inches, nail at least twice
- For wide planks (5 inches and above), nail every 4-6 inches
Step-by-Step Blind Nailing Process
- Position the board tight against the previous row - use the tapping block to close any gap before nailing
- Place the flooring nailer over the tongue at the first nail position (within 2 inches of the board end)
- Strike the plunger firmly with the rubber mallet - one clean strike drives the fastener fully
- Move along the board and repeat every 6-8 inches
- Nail within 2 inches of the far end of the board
- Proceed to the next board
Face Nailing the First and Last Rows
The flooring nailer can't reach the first 1-2 rows (too close to the wall) or the last row. For these:
- Pre-drill pilot holes to prevent splitting - drill at a slight angle toward the wall
- Drive finish nails or trim screws through the face of the board
- Set nail heads below the surface with a nail set
- These nails will be covered by baseboard and shoe molding
Troubleshooting
- Fastener not fully seated - increase air pressure slightly or strike the plunger harder
- Tongue splitting - decrease air pressure; pre-drill near board ends on harder species
- Board not staying tight - always close the gap with the tapping block before nailing; don't rely on the nailer to pull boards together
