How to Install Engineered Hardwood Floor

Three Ways to Install Engineered Hardwood

Unlike solid hardwood (which must be nailed), engineered hardwood offers three installation methods. The right choice depends on your subfloor type and personal preference.

  • Floating - boards click together and float over the subfloor with no fasteners. Fastest and most DIY-friendly.
  • Glue-down - boards are glued directly to the subfloor. Best for concrete and radiant heat systems.
  • Nail/staple-down - same as solid hardwood installation, requires a wood subfloor.

What You'll Need

Step 1: Check Moisture and Acclimate

Use your moisture meter to check the subfloor. For concrete, moisture should be below 3 lbs per 1000 sq ft per 24 hours (use a calcium chloride test). For wood subfloors, readings should be below 12%. Acclimate engineered hardwood in the room for 48-72 hours before installation.

Method A: Floating Floor Installation

  1. Install moisture barrier over concrete, or underlayment over wood subfloor
  2. Place spacers along the starting wall to maintain 3/8" to 1/2" expansion gap
  3. Lay the first row groove-side to the wall
  4. Click subsequent rows together at an angle, using the tapping block to close joints - never hammer directly on the board
  5. Stagger end joints by at least 8 inches between rows
  6. Use the pull bar for the last boards in each row
  7. Remove spacers and install baseboards to cover the expansion gap

Method B: Glue-Down Installation

  1. Apply construction adhesive to the subfloor in sections using a trowel
  2. Press boards firmly into the adhesive, maintaining expansion gaps at walls
  3. Use a roller to ensure full contact between board and adhesive
  4. Allow adhesive to cure per manufacturer instructions before foot traffic

Method C: Nail-Down Installation

Follow the same process as solid hardwood nail-down installation using the pneumatic flooring nailer. Requires a minimum 3/4" plywood subfloor.

Finishing Touches

Install transition strips at doorways where engineered hardwood meets other flooring types.
