A squeak happens when two pieces of wood move against each other. That movement can come from a nail that has backed out, a floorboard separated from the subfloor, a joist that has shrunk, or a stair tread that has dried and loosened over time. The first step is not to buy a new tool. It is to find the exact spot and decide whether you can reach it from above, from below, or only through the finished surface. Your approach depends on whether the floor is wood, tile, laminate, or carpet, and whether you have access to a crawlspace or basement under the noisy area.
Step 1: Locate the Exact Source
Walk across the floor slowly and mark the squeak with painter tape. Have a helper walk while you listen from below when possible. The sound may travel, so pressing firmly on the floor while observing movement from underneath can pinpoint a gap between the subfloor and joist. If the floor visibly flexes, you are dealing with insufficient support, not just a loose nail.
For stairs, identify whether the creak comes from the tread, the riser, or the stringer. A tread that moves downward when stepped on needs reinforcement at the front edge where it meets the riser. Access from Below Versus Above
If you have a basement or crawlspace, the most durable repair is usually from underneath. You can add a block of wood shimmed between the subfloor and the joist, then screw it or glue it so that it takes away the vertical play. This does not disturb the finished floor. If you only have access from above, you will need to make a small hole, insert adhesive, or drive screws through the finished surface, ideally into a joist or stud that you have located with a stud finder.
Never assume you know where a joist runs just by tapping or looking at nail rows. Use a stud finder that can detect wood or metal behind drywall, but remember that even a good scanner cannot see hidden wires, plumbing, or other obstructions. Mark the joist locations on the floor surface, and before you drill or screw, check for the possibility of cables or pipes in that bay. If the floor is on the second story, check what is directly underneath the planned screw: a light fixture, an outlet, or a heating run tells you to avoid that area or use a shorter screw.
Step 2: Choose the Right Fastener and Method
Once you know whether you are working from above or below, the fix comes down to pulling the wood together firmly without splitting it. A common failure is using a long screw that misses the joist or does not pull the subfloor tight because the threads are not seated properly. For wood floors, a trim-head screw can be countersunk and the hole filled with a matching wood filler. For carpet, a screw that penetrates the carpet backing will leave a visible bump unless you drive it carefully and then twist the carpet fibers back.
If the squeak is in a stud or joist that you can reach from below, apply construction adhesive to a small wood shim and wedge it into the gap, then secure it with a screw driven into the joist. Adhesive may not be needed if the shim is snug, but if there is any movement, a bead of construction adhesive helps hold the shim in place and stop dry wood from rubbing. Do not rely on adhesive alone to pull a large gap together. Use mechanical fasteners as well.
The Stair Fix That Actually Works
For a squeaky stair tread, the strongest approach is to reinforce the joint between the tread and the riser from underneath. If you can access the underside of the stairs, glue and screw a small block into the angle where the tread meets the riser, making sure the block does not interfere with headroom or carpet. If the stairs are finished and you cannot get below, you can drill a pilot hole through the top of the tread at the front edge, drive a trim-head screw into the riser at an angle, and then plug the hole with a matching wood filler. This is a classic technique, but it only works if the screw actually reaches the riser and pulls the two pieces together. Measure the thickness of the tread and the depth of the riser before you commit to a screw length. A screw that is too short will not bite, and one that is too long can poke through the face of the riser.

A wood filler will work for small holes, but no filler can match the transparency of real wood grain. Place the plug in the least noticeable part of the board, like a knot or near the edge.
When a Repair Is Not a Repair
If the floor is bouncing significantly, if you see cracks in the drywall above door frames, or if the stairs feel springy, you may be dealing with a structural issue. Squeaks are cosmetic. A floor that flexes under a heavy appliance or a stair that sags under load can indicate undersized joists, notched framing, or termite damage. Do not cover up movement with more screws and filler. Stop and have a contractor or engineer inspect the framing. Similarly, if you find water stains, soft spots, or rot, the wood may be weakened, and a mechanical fastener will not restore its strength.
Step 4: Use the Right Tools and Safety Gear
For most squeak repairs, you need a drill, screwdriver bits, a stud finder, a hammer, and possibly a small pry bar. If you are starting your toolkit, a basic household tool kit can cover the screwdrivers, hammer, and basic bits. Do not buy a cheap screwdriver set that will round out the heads of your screws. A magnetic screwdriver set helps you drive screws in tight spaces without dropping them behind the wall.
If you own a drill, use it to pre-drill holes, which prevents splitting the wood. A cordless drill is ideal because you can work in corners without a cord underfoot. If you are also doing other repairs, a cordless drill kit often includes extra bits and a battery that might be shared with other tools. For simple fastening, an impact driver is not necessary, but if you plan to drive many long screws, a drill and impact driver combo gives you the speed and torque without damaging the tool.
Before you drill into any floor, wall, or stair, you need protective eyewear because screws can snap or wood can splinter. A comfortable pair of safety glasses is a basic investment. If you are working under a house or in a dusty crawlspace, wear a N95 respirator mask and a pair of safety work gloves. The mask will not protect against all fumes or chemical vapors, but it is appropriate for dusty air. The gloves protect your hands from splinters and sharp edges, but they will not stop a drill bit or a saw blade.
Step 5: When to Use a Lubricant or a Shim
If the squeak is caused by two finished wood surfaces rubbing, like a stair tread rubbing against a riser, you may be able to stop the noise by applying a small amount of powdered graphite or a Teflon-based lubricant to the joint. This does not repair the connection, but it can be a temporary fix for a rental or for a joint that you cannot access. For a more durable shim repair, cut a thin wedge from cedar shim, apply a bead of construction adhesive to it, and tap it into the gap between the subfloor and the joist from below. The shim should be snug but not forced so much that it lifts the floor. After the adhesive cures, the wood will not move, and the squeak will be gone.
Do not use expanding foam for this purpose. Insulating foam sealant expands and can push the floor upward, creating a new gap or cracking the finish. That product is meant for filling larger holes and for weatherproofing around pipes, not for shimming a subfloor.
Step 6: A More Comprehensive Approach for Old Floors
If your home has multiple squeaks, some near the walls and others in the middle of the room, the subfloor may have dried and pulled away from the joists over a large area. In that case, a single screw patch will not be enough. You might need to add bridging or blocking between joists, or you may have to screw the existing subfloor down along the joist lines. Plan to work systematically: mark all joist locations on the floor, then drive screws every 6 to 8 inches along each joist line, countersinking the heads and filling the holes. This is labor-intensive but can make the floor feel solid again. When you are working above, you must be careful not to hit plumbing or electrical lines. If the floor is on the second story and you are not sure what is below, use the shortest screw that will still grab the subfloor, and do not aim for the joists unless you have a scanner that can map them accurately.
