It is a worn internal part, an incompatible replacement washer, or a misunderstanding of how the faucet transfers motion from the handle to the valve. Why the Same Faucet Handle Keeps Failing
A handle that repeatedly loosens usually points to one of three root causes. The first is a worn rubber washer or O-ring inside the faucet body that allows the stem to wobble. The second is a stripped spline or broach on the valve stem, which means the handle no longer grips the metal shaft firmly. The third is overtightening, which strips the threads or cracks the handle base, especially on plastic or zinc components. Understanding which cause applies to your faucet prevents you from buying the wrong part or applying a temporary patch that fails again.
Checking the Handle-to-Stem Connection
Start by turning off the water supply under the sink. Open the faucet to release pressure, then remove the handle screw. Look for the small setscrew on the side of the handle base if the screw is hidden. Pull the handle straight off. Examine the stem and the inside of the handle. If the stem has smooth areas or the handle has rounded internal splines, the connection is stripped. A handle that can be pressed down but still slips needs either a new handle or a stem, depending on which part is damaged. If the stem looks intact, the next suspect is the internal seal stack.

Sometimes the handle is fine, but the faucet still drips or struggles to turn. That happens when the internal valve seat or cartridge is worn, not the handle at all. On compression faucets, a rubber seat washer on the end of the stem is the usual culprit. On cartridge or ceramic disc faucets, the entire cartridge must be replaced. A faucet that requires progressively more force to turn often signals calcium buildup inside the valve body. Removing the stem and cleaning the interior with white vinegar can dissolve mineral deposits, but never combine vinegar with any drain cleaner or chemical product. If the faucet body is corroded or cracked, the repair is beyond user-serviceable and requires a plumber.

The screws and nuts inside a faucet are small, and stripping the head of a hidden setscrew turns a simple repair into a major one. How to Avoid Repeating the Same Repair
After you install the correct washers or cartridge, it is tempting to overtighten the handle screw to prevent future looseness. Resist that urge. Hand tighten the screw, then give it a quarter turn with a screwdriver. Overtightening distorts the rubber seals, cracks plastic bases, and strips the threads. Instead, use a thread-locking compound on the handle screw if the faucet vibrates or sees heavy use. This secures the fastener without excessive force. Also, inspect the base of the handle and the escutcheon for hairline cracks before reassembly. A cracked handle will always feel loose no matter how correctly the internal parts are installed.
Recognizing When a Faucet Needs Professional Attention
If the faucet still drips after replacing the seals, or if the stem area leaks around the packing nut, you may have a damaged valve body. Similarly, a faucet that wobbles at the base might have a loose mounting nut, but a faucet that moves laterally and leaks underneath usually has a corroded supply line or failed gasket. Water stains on the cabinet floor, rust around the base, or green corrosion on copper supply lines indicate hidden water damage. In those cases, continuing to repair the top of the faucet is a temporary patch. A licensed plumber can assess whether the valve body, supply lines, or the faucet itself must be replaced. Do not attempt to cut or unsweat supply lines unless you have the correct tools and experience. Shut off the water and call for help if you see damp drywall, swelling cabinet panels, or repeated leaks after a correct repair.

The difference between a temporary fix and a durable repair is matching the right part to the right diagnosis. Buying a generic washer pack without inspecting the condition of the stem is a gamble. Overtightening a screw to mask a stripped stem is a timer. The reliable path is to identify whether the problem is the handle connection, the internal seals, or the valve body. Use a documented disassembly sequence, replace all rubber parts in the affected assembly, lubricate moving surfaces, and reassemble with moderate torque.
