How to Fix a Drawer Slide

How to Fix a Drawer Slide

Drawer slides are the unsung heroes of functional furniture — when they work, you never notice them. When they fail, every drawer becomes a frustration. Whether your slides are bent, loose, noisy, or simply worn out, most drawer slide problems can be fixed quickly. Here's how.

What You'll Need

Types of Drawer Slides

Before fixing, identify what type of slides you have:

  • Wooden runners: Simple wooden strips the drawer rides on. Common in older and antique furniture.
  • Side-mount metal slides: Metal slides attached to the sides of the drawer and cabinet. The most common type in modern furniture.
  • Under-mount slides: Hidden slides attached to the bottom of the drawer. Common in higher-end cabinetry.
  • Center-mount slides: A single slide running along the center bottom of the drawer.

Fix 1: Tighten Loose Screws

The most common drawer slide problem is simply loose mounting screws. Pull the drawer out and check every screw on both the cabinet-side and drawer-side of the slides. Tighten all loose screws with a screwdriver. If a screw hole has stripped, fill it with wood glue and a toothpick, let cure, then re-drive the screw. This simple fix solves most slide problems.

Fix 2: Straighten a Bent Slide

If a metal slide is slightly bent, remove it from the cabinet and drawer. Place it on a flat surface and use pliers or a rubber mallet to carefully straighten the bent section. Reinstall and test. If the bend is severe or the slide is cracked, replace it entirely.

Fix 3: Clean and Lubricate

Dirty or dry slides cause friction, noise, and binding. Remove the drawer and wipe the slides clean with a damp cloth. Once dry, apply a thin coat of paste wax, silicone spray, or dry lubricant to the slide tracks. Reinstall the drawer and test — smooth, quiet operation is usually restored immediately.

Fix 4: Realign Misaligned Slides

If the drawer is binding or running unevenly, the slides may be misaligned. Loosen the mounting screws slightly, adjust the slide position until the drawer runs smoothly, then retighten. Use a level to ensure both slides are at exactly the same height — even a 1/8" difference causes binding.

Fix 5: Fix Wooden Runners

For older furniture with wooden runners, lubricate with candle wax or soap. If a runner is worn down unevenly, glue a thin strip of wood to the worn area to build it back up. If the runner is broken, remove it and glue and screw a new one in its place using Titebond wood glue.

Pro Tips

  • Always fix slides in pairs — if one side is worn, the other usually is too.
  • When reinstalling slides, use a level to ensure perfect horizontal alignment.
  • Soft-close slides are worth upgrading to — they prevent slamming and last much longer than standard slides.
  • Add felt pads to the drawer bottom corners to reduce noise and protect the cabinet interior.
