How to Clean Metal Range Hood Filters

Metal Range Hood Filters: Aluminum Mesh vs. Stainless Steel Baffle
Metal range hood filters come in two main types, each with slightly different cleaning considerations:
- Aluminum mesh filters: Thin, lightweight, accordion-style mesh. Very common in standard range hoods. Dishwasher-safe in most cases. Can discolor with very harsh chemicals.
- Stainless steel baffle filters: Heavier, with curved baffles that direct grease into a collection channel. Found in professional-style and higher-end range hoods. More durable, handle stronger degreasers well.
Both types are washable and reusable — the cleaning methods are similar, with minor differences noted below.
What You'll Need
- Zep Heavy-Duty Citrus Degreaser Concentrate — most effective for baked-on grease
- Dawn Platinum Dish Soap
- Rubber cleaning gloves
- Baking soda
- Large basin or sink
- Stiff-bristle brush
- Boiling water
Cleaning Aluminum Mesh Filters
Method 1: Boiling Water Soak (Regular Maintenance)
- Remove the filter from the range hood.
- Place in a large sink or basin.
- Pour boiling water over the filter to melt surface grease.
- Add dish soap and ¼ cup baking soda.
- Soak 15–20 minutes.
- Scrub with a stiff brush, working through the mesh channels.
- Rinse under hot running water.
- Dry completely before reinstalling.
Method 2: Dishwasher (Easiest)
- Confirm dishwasher-safe in your manual.
- Place on the bottom rack.
- Run the hottest, heaviest cycle.
- Inspect and repeat if needed.
- Dry completely.
Note for aluminum: Avoid very alkaline dishwasher detergents or prolonged soaking in strong alkaline solutions — they can cause aluminum to darken. This is cosmetic only and doesn't affect function.
Method 3: Zep Citrus Degreaser (Heavy Buildup)
- Dilute Zep Citrus Degreaser 1:6 with hot water.
- Soak the filter for 20 minutes.
- Scrub and rinse thoroughly.
Cleaning Stainless Steel Baffle Filters
Baffle filters are more robust and handle stronger cleaning solutions:
Method 1: Zep Citrus Degreaser Soak (Best Method)
- Fill a basin with hot water.
- Add Zep Citrus Degreaser at 1:4 ratio for heavy buildup.
- Submerge the baffle filter completely.
- Soak for 20–30 minutes.
- Scrub the baffles and channels with a stiff brush.
- Rinse thoroughly under hot water.
- Dry completely.
Method 2: Dishwasher
Stainless steel baffle filters are generally dishwasher-safe and handle the dishwasher better than aluminum. Run on the hottest cycle.
Emptying the Grease Collection Cup
Baffle filters often have a grease collection cup or channel at the bottom:
- Remove and empty the cup into the trash — never down the drain.
- Wash the cup with dish soap and hot water.
- Dry and replace.
How Often to Clean Metal Filters
- Light cooking: every 2–3 months
- Regular cooking: monthly
- Heavy frying: every 2–3 weeks
Final Thoughts
Metal range hood filters are designed to be cleaned and reused indefinitely. Boiling water and dish soap handle regular maintenance; Zep Citrus Degreaser tackles heavy buildup; the dishwasher makes monthly cleaning effortless. Keep them clean and your range hood will capture grease and odors at full efficiency.
