Kitchen Scales: Electronic Tools That Need Gentle Cleaning
Kitchen scales are electronic devices that can be permanently damaged by water getting into the internal components. Cleaning requires a careful approach that keeps the surface clean without exposing the electronics to moisture. Here's how to do it safely.
What You'll Need
- Microfiber cloth
- Non-scratch scrub sponge
- Mild dish soap
- Warm water
- White vinegar
- Cotton swabs
The Most Important Rule: Never Submerge
Never submerge a kitchen scale in water or run it under the tap. Water entering the electronic components will permanently damage the scale. All cleaning must be done with a damp — not wet — cloth.
Cleaning the Weighing Platform
- Remove the weighing platform if it's detachable — many scales have a removable platform that can be washed separately
- If removable: wash with warm soapy water, rinse, and dry completely before replacing
- If not removable: wipe with a cloth dampened with warm soapy water, wringing out thoroughly so it's barely damp
- Wipe clean with a damp cloth (water only) to remove soap residue
- Dry immediately with a dry microfiber cloth
Cleaning the Body and Display
- Turn the scale off and remove batteries if possible before cleaning
- Wipe the body with a barely damp microfiber cloth
- Use a cotton swab dampened with water to clean around buttons and the display edge
- Wipe dry immediately
- Never spray cleaning products directly onto the scale
Removing Sticky Residue
For sticky residue on the platform, dampen a cloth with warm soapy water (wrung out well), apply to the sticky area, let sit 1–2 minutes, then wipe clean. For stubborn residue, a cloth dampened with white vinegar works well.
Cleaning Around Buttons
Buttons accumulate grease and food residue in the gaps. Use a cotton swab dampened with water or white vinegar to clean around each button. Don't press liquid into the button gaps.
Final Thoughts
Kitchen scale cleaning is all about moisture control — damp cloths only, never wet, never submerged. A quick wipe after every use prevents buildup. Cotton swabs handle the buttons and display edges. Keep it dry and your scale will last for years.
