Why Is My Ice Maker Leaking Water?
An ice maker that leaks water can cause ice buildup in the freezer, water pooling on the floor, and damage to the fridge interior. Here's how to diagnose the source of an ice maker leak and fix it.
Common Causes of Ice Maker Leaking Water
1. Ice Maker Overfilling
If the ice maker fills with too much water, it overflows the ice mold and water drips into the freezer, where it freezes into a sheet of ice or drips to the floor.
Symptoms: Ice sheet forming under the ice maker, water dripping from the ice maker area, ice cubes fused together.
Causes of overfilling:
- Water inlet valve not closing fully after filling.
- Water pressure too high (above 80 psi), causing the valve to overfill.
- Ice maker water level adjustment needed.
Fix: Check your home's water pressure. If above 80 psi, install a pressure regulator. If the water inlet valve is not closing fully, it may need replacement — call a technician.
2. Cracked or Misaligned Water Supply Line
The water supply line that connects to the ice maker can crack, loosen, or become misaligned, causing water to drip at the connection point.
Symptoms: Water dripping from behind the fridge or from the water line connection at the back of the freezer.
Fix: Pull the fridge away from the wall and inspect the water supply line and all connections. Tighten any loose fittings. Replace the line if cracked or damaged.
3. Clogged or Frozen Defrost Drain
If the defrost drain is clogged or frozen, water from the defrost cycle can back up and appear to come from the ice maker area.
Fix: Clear the defrost drain by flushing warm water through the drain hole at the back of the freezer interior.
4. Ice Maker Fill Tube Frozen or Misaligned
The fill tube delivers water to the ice maker mold. If it's frozen, water backs up and overflows. If it's misaligned, water misses the mold and drips into the freezer.
Symptoms: Water dripping inside the freezer near the ice maker, ice buildup around the fill tube.
Fix: Unplug the fridge. Use a hair dryer on low heat to thaw the fill tube. Check that the fill tube is properly aligned with the ice maker mold opening. Reposition if needed.
5. Cracked Ice Maker Mold
In rare cases, the ice maker mold itself can crack, causing water to leak during the filling cycle.
Fix: Inspect the ice maker mold for cracks. If cracked, the ice maker unit may need replacement — call a technician or consult your fridge's service manual.
6. Ice Bin Not Properly Seated
If the ice bin isn't properly seated, ice can fall outside the bin and melt, creating water in the freezer.
Fix: Remove and reseat the ice bin, making sure it's fully pushed in and properly aligned.
Quick Troubleshooting Checklist
- Check water pressure — above 80 psi can cause overfilling.
- Inspect the water supply line for cracks or loose connections.
- Clear the defrost drain if blocked.
- Thaw and realign the fill tube if frozen or misaligned.
- Inspect the ice maker mold for cracks.
- Reseat the ice bin properly.
- Call a technician for water inlet valve or ice maker unit replacement.
