Why Is Dishwasher Door Not Closing Properly

Why Won’t Your Dishwasher Door Close?

A dishwasher door that will not close or latch properly prevents the machine from starting and can be caused by several different issues — from a simple loading problem to a worn latch or damaged door seal. Here is how to diagnose and fix the most common causes.

1. Something Is Blocking the Door (Most Common)

The most frequent reason a dishwasher door will not close is that a dish, pot handle, or utensil is sticking out and physically blocking the door from shutting.

Fix: Open the dishwasher and check that no items are protruding beyond the rack edges. Push all items fully into the racks, ensure pot handles are not sticking up, and confirm the cutlery basket is fully seated. Try closing the door again.

2. The Racks Are Not Fully Pushed In

If either the top or bottom rack is not fully pushed back into the dishwasher, the door cannot close completely.

Fix: Push both racks firmly all the way back until they stop. Check that the top rack is properly seated on its rails and has not jumped off the track.

3. The Door Latch Is Worn or Broken

The door latch is the mechanism that holds the door closed during the cycle. Over time, the latch can wear down, become misaligned, or break entirely, preventing the door from catching and holding shut.

Fix: Inspect the latch on the door and the strike plate on the dishwasher body. Look for visible damage, wear, or misalignment. A worn latch needs to be replaced — latch replacement kits are available for most dishwasher models and are a straightforward DIY repair.

4. The Door Hinges Are Damaged or Misaligned

Damaged or bent door hinges can cause the door to sit at a slight angle, preventing it from aligning correctly with the latch.

Fix: Inspect the hinges on both sides of the door for visible damage or bending. Check that the door hangs evenly — if one side is lower than the other, a hinge may be damaged. Hinge replacement is a more involved repair that may require a technician.

5. The Door Seal Is Damaged or Misaligned

A damaged, swollen, or misaligned door gasket (the rubber seal around the door opening) can prevent the door from closing fully.

Fix: Inspect the door seal all the way around the opening. Look for tears, cracks, swelling, or sections that have come loose from the channel. A damaged seal needs to be replaced. A seal that has simply come loose from its channel can often be pressed back into place.

6. The Dishwasher Is Not Level

If the dishwasher is not sitting level on the floor, the door may not align correctly with the frame, making it difficult to close and latch.

Fix: Check that the dishwasher is level from side to side and front to back using a spirit level. Adjust the leveling feet at the bottom of the machine until it sits level. Most dishwashers have adjustable feet that can be turned by hand or with a wrench.

When to Call a Technician

  • The latch or hinges are visibly broken and you are not comfortable replacing them yourself
  • The door is warped or bent
  • The dishwasher is under warranty — DIY repairs may void the warranty

Final Tips

  • Always check for protruding items first — it is the most common cause
  • Inspect the latch, hinges, and door seal for visible damage
  • Check that the dishwasher is level if the door seems misaligned
  • Replace worn latches and seals promptly to prevent water leaks
