Is It Safe to Microwave Styrofoam
Share
The Short Answer
Generally, no — most styrofoam is not safe to microwave. Standard styrofoam (polystyrene) can melt, warp, and release styrene — a chemical that may be harmful — into your food when heated. However, there is an exception: some styrofoam containers are specifically labeled as microwave-safe and have been tested for this use.
What Is Styrofoam?
Styrofoam is a brand name for expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam, a lightweight plastic material commonly used for disposable cups, takeout containers, and food packaging. It's made from polystyrene (#6 plastic), which has a relatively low melting point and is not designed to withstand microwave temperatures.
What Happens When You Microwave Styrofoam?
When styrofoam is microwaved:
- It can melt or warp: Styrofoam softens at relatively low temperatures. Hot food or liquids can cause it to deform, potentially spilling contents.
- It can leach styrene: Heat accelerates the migration of styrene monomer from the plastic into food. Styrene is classified as a possible human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).
- It may release other additives: Flame retardants and other chemicals used in styrofoam production can also migrate into food when heated.
The Exception: Microwave-Safe Styrofoam
Some styrofoam containers are specifically manufactured and tested for microwave use. These are labeled with a microwave-safe symbol (wavy lines) on the bottom. Microwave-safe styrofoam uses different formulations or coatings that reduce chemical migration at microwave temperatures.
How to check: Look at the bottom of the container for the microwave-safe symbol. If it's not there, don't microwave it.
Common Styrofoam Items and Their Safety
| Item | Microwave Safe? |
|---|---|
| Restaurant takeout styrofoam containers | ❌ No — not labeled safe |
| Styrofoam coffee cups | ❌ No — can melt with hot liquids |
| Styrofoam plates (plain) | ❌ No — unless labeled safe |
| Styrofoam labeled "microwave-safe" | ✅ Yes — if symbol is present |
| Styrofoam packaging / peanuts | ❌ Never — not food-grade |
What to Use Instead
The safest approach is to transfer food from styrofoam containers to a microwave-safe glass or ceramic container before heating. This eliminates any risk of chemical leaching and gives better, more even heating results.

What to Avoid
- ❌ Don't microwave styrofoam takeout containers — transfer food to glass first
- ❌ Don't microwave styrofoam cups with hot beverages — the heat can cause melting
- ❌ Don't assume styrofoam is safe just because it held hot food before — serving temperature is lower than microwave temperature
- ❌ Don't microwave styrofoam that shows any signs of melting or warping
Final Thoughts
Most styrofoam is not safe to microwave. Unless the container is explicitly labeled with a microwave-safe symbol, transfer your food to a glass or ceramic container before heating. It takes 10 seconds and eliminates any risk of chemical exposure. Glass is always the safer, smarter choice.
