How to Store Onions - Should You Refrigerate
Share
Onions are a kitchen staple found in nearly every cuisine — but they're often stored incorrectly. Should you refrigerate onions? The answer depends on the type of onion and whether it's been cut. Here's the complete guide to storing onions properly.
Should You Refrigerate Whole Onions?
Generally, no — whole, unpeeled onions store best at room temperature. Onions prefer cool (45–55°F / 7–13°C), dry, and well-ventilated conditions. Most home refrigerators are too cold and too humid for whole onions, which causes them to become soft and moldy faster.
Exception: Sweet onions (Vidalia, Walla Walla) and green onions have higher water content and do better in the refrigerator.
How to Store Whole Onions at Room Temperature
- Store in a cool, dry, dark, well-ventilated spot — A pantry, cellar, or open basket on the counter away from sunlight and heat is ideal.
- Use a mesh bag or open basket — Onions need airflow. Never store in a sealed plastic bag — trapped moisture and ethylene gas cause rapid rot.
- Keep away from potatoes — Potatoes emit moisture and ethylene gas that cause onions to sprout and spoil faster. Store in separate locations.
- Keep away from garlic — Store separately for maximum shelf life.
When to Refrigerate Onions
- Cut or peeled onions — Always refrigerate. Place in a ComSaf Airtight Container to contain the strong odor. Use within 7–10 days.
- Sweet onions — Refrigerate wrapped individually in paper towels. Use within 1–2 months.
- Green onions / scallions — Always refrigerate.
How to Store Cut Onions
- Wrap the cut half tightly in plastic wrap, or place in a ComSaf Airtight Container.
- Refrigerate immediately.
- Keep away from dairy, eggs, and delicate foods — onion odor transfers easily.
- Use within 7–10 days.
How Long Do Onions Last?
- Whole onions (room temperature, ventilated): 1–3 months
- Sweet onions (refrigerator): 1–2 months
- Cut onions (airtight container, fridge): 7–10 days
- Frozen diced onions: up to 12 months
How to Freeze Onions
Peel, dice, and freeze raw onions in a single layer on a baking sheet. Transfer to a SPLF Reusable Freezer Bag. No blanching needed. Frozen onions go directly into cooked dishes. Lasts up to 12 months.
