How to Store Butter in Refrigerator
Share
Butter is a kitchen staple that most people store without much thought — but there are right and wrong ways to do it. Whether you prefer it cold and firm or soft and spreadable, here's how to store butter in the refrigerator (and on the counter) properly.
Refrigerator vs. Counter: Which Is Better for Butter?
Both are acceptable — it depends on how quickly you use it:
- Refrigerator: Best for long-term storage. Keeps butter fresh for up to 3 months. Butter will be firm and harder to spread straight from the fridge.
- Counter (room temperature): Acceptable for salted butter for up to 1–2 weeks in a covered butter dish. Unsalted butter is more perishable and should be kept refrigerated.
How to Store Butter in the Refrigerator
- Keep in original wrapper — Butter's foil or wax paper wrapper is designed to protect it from light and odors. Keep it on until the butter is used up.
- Place in an airtight container — Store wrapped butter in a ComSaf Airtight Container for extra protection. Butter absorbs fridge odors extremely easily — even through its wrapper. A sealed container is the best defense.
- Store away from strong-smelling foods — Keep butter away from onions, garlic, fish, and pungent cheeses.
- Store on a main shelf — Not the door, where temperature fluctuates.
How to Store Butter on the Counter
For spreadable butter at room temperature, use a French butter crock (also called a butter bell). This clever device keeps butter fresh on the counter for up to 1 month by submerging the butter in a small amount of water, creating an airtight seal. Change the water every 3 days.
Alternatively, use a covered butter dish and keep in a cool spot away from direct sunlight and heat. Use within 1–2 weeks for salted butter.
How Long Does Butter Last?
- Salted butter (refrigerator): up to 3 months
- Unsalted butter (refrigerator): 1–2 months
- Salted butter (counter, covered): 1–2 weeks
- Frozen butter: up to 12 months
How to Freeze Butter
Butter freezes exceptionally well with no quality loss. Freeze in original packaging, or wrap in foil and place in a SPLF Reusable Freezer Bag. Label with the date. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight. Frozen butter lasts up to 12 months.
Signs Butter Has Gone Bad
- Rancid or sour smell
- Yellow or darker discoloration on the surface (oxidation — scrape off and use the rest if it smells fine)
- Mold on the surface (discard entirely)
- Off or soapy taste
